AGSD may lose millions in state funding for the 2010–2011 budget

Last week, Harrisburg notified school districts that reduction or elimination of school funding may be used to help resolve the state budget shortfall (see attachment below).  Commonwealth funding in the AGSD proposed 2010-2011 budget accounts for more than 30% ($25MM) of our operating revenue.  This loss would have a serious impact on the quality of the education our children receive.  We need your help!

What you can do to ensure our schools maintain state funding:

1.   Contact Senator Pileggi to request full commonwealth funding for the 2010-11 school year. He needs to know that this is important to his constituents ASAP!  Call and/or write several times!

·  Call ►      Office: 717-787-4712

·  Email or Write ►      http://www.senatorpileggi.com/contact.htm

Senator Dominic Pileggi

350 Main Capitol
Harrisburg, PA 17120

Here’s a sample letter you can use or edit:

Dear Senator Pileggi,

I want you to know that I am counting on your support of funding for the Avon Grove School District with the money it desperately needs despite the recent and significant changes in the Commonwealth's financial position.

I am keeping a close eye on this issue.  The education of all our children must be given the utmost priority.  Please show us that you support our children and their futures!

Please keep me informed of your efforts.

Thanks in advance,

Your Name,

Avon Grove School District

2.   Attend school board meetings – Schedule► http://www.avongrove.org/district/aboutus/board_meetings.html

Especially at this critical time, we need to be proactive and let the board know that you care about the quality of the education our children are receiving.  Cuts are being made to the budget and we need to be watchful.  Please join us...we are all busy but need to make the time.

The next school board meeting is Thursday, May 13th at 7:30pm in the AGIS Audion

- Please mark your calendar -

Complaining after the cuts are made is not likely to be helpful.  Without contacting our senator or attending the board meetings it will be assumed we do not care.  Sharing our concerns with each other will do nothing.    Simply put, we need to take action.
