"The Mistakes"

Artist Statement:
"This video is about somebody making a painting and messing up, but they keep on trying until they eventually give up. After a day, they come back and decide to turn the paintings into an art show. This is an example of Accepting Imperfection because it shows that if you mess up, it can turn into something beautiful."

Artist Biography

My name is Edie Whitehead. I am 13 years old and I live in Rapid City, South Dakota.

I am inspired by my peers and my dad who is an artist and teaches art. I like to repurpose things. For example, I get funny books from the free library and make collages out of them.

I use all kinds of materials and often make BIG messes. I like to use clay, create slime, collages, paint, and I love baking mini things for my mini kitchen. Of course, I like to create little movies too.

Art to me is meant to be funny. It should make people smile and giggle. I hope I continue to make art that brings me and others joy. I would love to be an actor but I also want to be a dentist someday.

Artist Interview

Edie shares more about her life, inspirations and the advice she has for other student artists.

Tell Us More About Yourself

"I like cooking, ballet, singing, and aerial silks. I also like going to the library with my friend and doing crafts with her. My favorite subject in school is chorus. I love singing! I feel like it's the only class I can be myself and it is a safe space for everyone in the class. Winnie the Pooh is my favorite book character and he has taught me that it is okay to be yourself and to be kind."

What Advice Do You Have for Other Artists

"Art is everywhere and it starts with using the power of imagination. There are a lot of materials in nature and around the house. It is important to just create and explore with materials and the ideas and art will come naturally…Just think. If you can’t figure it out right away, you will eventually. Don’t give up!"

Why Students Should Participate in Reflections

"I never thought I would get first place! I participated because I thought it sounded fun and I liked the theme. No one is perfect and sometimes our mistakes can be beautiful. Sometimes we make art just for ourselves and it doesn’t matter what others think. Winning this is definitely a bonus and something I will always be proud of. I know there will be many times in life where I don’t win, but I will continue to try. If you never try and put yourself out there, you will never know! I hope others try and enjoy the experience of putting art out there, especially if it makes others giggle."
