Niko Gomez Ref-Icon-Photography

Niko Gomez is a photographer from Steenroad PTA in West Virginia.

His photo “Accepting Imperfections” captures how those who truly love us embrace our flaws. Not despite them, but because they are part of who we are.

Artist Statement:
"I always hear my grandma say how old her hands look. The wrinkles, the dark spots or her brittle nails. She says they just don't look how they used to. She would pretty much call them imperfect. To our family those hands cooked for us, did our laundry, played cards with us, prayed for us, worked in the yard, wiped our tears and fixed our scrapes. I hope my grandma knows how much we accept and appreciate those so-called imperfect hands."

Artist Biography

My name is Niko Gomez and I am 10 yrs old from Wheeling, WV. I love taking photos of things that I find interesting, fun or something I would want to remember for a long time. My mom has printed some of my photographs and hung them up in our home. I don’t have a really expensive camera so when I see something that catches my eye I just grab my cell phone and start taking pictures.

What I love about taking photos is they are memories you will have for a long time. It’s a great way to collect all of the things you love or find exciting and you can share them with others.

There have been many places I’ve been able to go that others have not been able to and bringing home my photos to share with them is fun. Art comes in many forms. Anything you create is art! There is no right or wrong, it just allows you to be yourself.

Artist Interview

Niko shares more about his life, inspirations and the advice he has for other student artists.

Tell Us More About Yourself

"My favorite hobbies and activities include football and baseball. I also love going to amusement parks and going to the beach with my family and friends. I do not have a favorite subject in school currently. I would say I like them all the same."

What Advice Do You Have for Other Artists

"There are different ways to create art. Find something that you love and are passionate about and find a way to create a piece of art from it."

Why Students Should Participate in Reflections

"I have done the Reflections program for quite a few years now. It’s always nice to see all the ways we can create art and how we all interpret it differently. The PTA Reflections program allows you to create your own pieces that may help and inspire others. It is definitely nice to be recognized for something that you like doing and that the Reflections program rewards you for your efforts."
